What Do Numbers on Gold Mean? (Hallmark Guide)

If you look closely at your jewelry with a magnifying glass, you will see a tiny stamp. This is called a "Hallmark" or "Purity Mark." In the USA and Europe, these numbers tell you exactly how much pure gold is inside the metal.

However, these codes can be confusing. Is "585" real gold? What does "925" mean on a gold chain? Our Gold Hallmark Identification Wizard helps you translate these confusing numbers into Karats instantly.

Hallmark FAQs

❓ What does "GP" or "GF" mean?
If you see 18K GP, it stands for "Gold Plated." It means the item is made of cheap metal (like copper) with a super thin layer of gold on top. It has almost no resale value. GF means "Gold Filled," which is slightly better but still not solid gold.
❓ My ring has no stamp, is it fake?
Not necessarily. If the ring is very old or has been resized, the stamp might have worn off. However, unstamped jewelry should always be tested with an acid kit or our Density Calculator to be sure.
❓ Is 925 Gold real?
No! 925 is the code for Sterling Silver. If your chain looks gold but is stamped 925, it is actually "Gold Vermeil" (Silver dipped in gold). It is worth the price of silver, not gold.
